A strong React JS developer turns designs into a maintainable component system — not a set of one-off pages that break on the next release. The hard part of hiring one in India is not finding candidates; it is telling the good ones apart from people who have only followed tutorials.

This guide covers the skills worth testing, a practical task you can run in an hour, typical rates, red flags in portfolios, and when a freelancer makes more sense than an agency. I'm Arun Tyagi, a full-stack developer in Noida who builds React front ends on Laravel APIs, so this is written from the side of the person you would be hiring.

Start with what you are hiring for

"React developer" covers very different jobs. Be clear which one is yours before you shortlist anyone:

  • Dashboards and admin panels behind a login — data tables, filters, forms, charts. Search engines don't matter; state management and API handling do.
  • Marketing sites and storefronts that must rank in Google — usually Next.js with server rendering, where performance and SEO matter more than complex state.
  • Product front ends for SaaS — a mix of both, plus authentication, roles and billing screens.
  • React Native apps — related skills, but a different job with app-store releases and device testing.

Core skills to check

  • Hooks and predictable state. Can they explain when local state is enough and when to reach for context, Redux, Zustand or React Query?
  • TypeScript for anything beyond a small project — typed props and API responses catch a large class of bugs before release.
  • API integration. Loading and error states, token refresh, retries, and what the screen shows when the API is slow.
  • Performance. Code splitting, memoisation where it actually helps, and virtualised lists for long tables.
  • Forms and validation — most business apps are forms, and this is where junior work shows first.
  • Accessibility basics — keyboard navigation, labels and focus handling.

A one-hour practical task

Interviews that ask for definitions reward memorisation. A small paid task shows how someone actually works. A useful one:

  1. Give them a public JSON API (or a small mock) that returns a list of orders.
  2. Ask for a page that lists the orders with a search box and a status filter, a loading state, and an error message if the request fails.
  3. Ask them to make the list work with 5,000 rows without freezing.
  4. Review the code together for 15 minutes: why they structured components that way, and what they would change with more time.

You learn more from that conversation than from any CV: how they name things, whether they handle failure, and whether they can explain trade-offs in plain language.

What React developers cost in India

Rates vary widely with experience and with what is included. As a rough guide for freelancers in Delhi NCR and Noida:

LevelTypical engagementWhat you should get
JuniorLower hourly rates; needs close reviewScreens built from clear designs and an existing API.
Mid-levelHourly or monthlyFeatures end to end on an established codebase.
SeniorRoughly Rs.1,500–4,000 per hour, or milestone pricing for defined MVPsArchitecture, API contracts, performance and code review.

Whatever the rate, agree in writing who owns design handoff, who owns the API, and what "done" means for each milestone. Most disputes come from those three gaps, not from the hourly number.

Red flags in portfolios

  • Only template or landing-page work when you need an application.
  • No live links, or live links that no longer work.
  • Every project uses a different stack with no depth in any of them.
  • They can't explain what they personally built on a team project.
  • No mention of testing, deployment or how bugs were handled after launch.

Freelancer, agency or in-house?

FreelancerOne product, a clear scope, and you want direct contact with the person writing code.Single point of failure — insist on the repository being in your account and on documentation.
AgencyYou need design, QA and several developers under one contract.Senior people in the sales call, junior people on the code.

Laravel + React: one developer or two?

Many products use Laravel for the API and React for the interface. For MVPs and internal tools, one full-stack developer who does both removes the coordination gap between frontend and backend. For larger teams, separate specialists make more sense. I explain the trade-off on the full-stack Laravel + React developer page.

Before you hire

  • Write a one-page brief: users, the five most important screens, and the API (existing or to be built).
  • Run the practical task with your top two candidates.
  • Agree milestones you can test on a staging URL.
  • Keep the repository, hosting and domain in your own name.

If you want a React front end on a Laravel backend, see React JS development or book a call to discuss your roadmap.

Frequently Asked Questions

What skills should a React developer have in 2026?

Hooks and predictable state management, TypeScript, API integration with proper loading and error states, performance basics and solid form handling.

How do I test a React developer before hiring?

Run a short paid task: a list page with search, filters, loading and error states, then review the code together for 15 minutes.

Should one developer build both the React front end and the Laravel API?

For MVPs and internal tools, often yes, because it removes the coordination gap. Larger teams usually benefit from separate specialists.
