A cab booking platform is three products that must work together in real time: a rider app, a driver app and a dispatch panel. Building all three well is a serious project, so the first decision is which part of the market you are serving — because a city ride-hailing app and an airport transfer service need very different software.
Which kind of cab business are you?
| Business | Booking style | Key feature |
|---|---|---|
| Local fleet or travel agency | Pre-booked trips and outstation | Fixed fares, trip packages, driver assignment by staff. |
| Airport and hotel transfers | Scheduled pickups | Flight number tracking, meet-and-greet notes, corporate billing. |
| Corporate employee transport | Recurring shifts | Route planning, rosters, employee safety features. |
| On-demand city rides | Instant booking | Live driver matching, surge rules, high reliability. |
Most fleet owners do best starting with pre-booked and scheduled rides, where the software pays for itself quickly, before attempting instant city rides.
Rider app
- Pickup and drop with map search, fare estimate before booking.
- Vehicle categories, scheduled rides and outstation trips.
- Live driver location, OTP to start the trip, SOS and trip sharing.
- UPI, card, wallet or cash payment, with an invoice after the ride.
Driver app
- Online/offline status, trip requests with accept or decline.
- Navigation hand-off to Google Maps, trip start with rider OTP.
- Earnings, trip history and document uploads (licence, permit, insurance).
Dispatch and admin panel
- Live map of drivers and trips; manual assignment when needed.
- Fare rules by city, vehicle type, time of day and distance.
- Driver onboarding and document expiry alerts.
- Commission, payouts and corporate account billing.
The real-time part
Driver locations are sent every few seconds and pushed to riders and the dispatch panel over WebSockets. Matching looks for the nearest available drivers and offers the trip in turn. This is where a small Node.js service alongside the Laravel backend often makes sense, because it handles many open connections efficiently.
Running costs to plan for
- Maps — map display, routes and distance calculations are billed by usage; the design keeps calls to a minimum.
- SMS and push notifications for OTPs and trip updates.
- Servers sized for the number of drivers online at peak.
- App store accounts and updates for new Android and iOS versions.
How the build is phased
- Admin panel and booking for scheduled rides, with manual driver assignment.
- Driver app with live tracking.
- Rider app with payments.
- Automatic matching and on-demand rides, once the fleet is ready.
The apps are built in React Native for Android and iOS. Book a call and tell me how your fleet takes bookings today.
