AI tools can write a landing page draft in minutes and generate a working prototype in an afternoon. They will not sit on a staging call, defend a security decision, or take responsibility when the payroll calculation is wrong. The useful question is not "AI or human" but which parts of your project each should handle.
I'm Arun Tyagi, a senior freelance developer in Noida. I use AI tools every day on client projects, so this is a practical view rather than a defensive one.
What AI tools do well today
- Drafts — page copy, email templates and first versions of documentation.
- Boilerplate code — forms, CRUD screens, test scaffolding and repetitive mapping code.
- Learning — explaining an unfamiliar API or library quickly.
- Prototypes — clickable ideas you plan to throw away once the concept is proven.
- Simple websites — AI website builders are fine for a basic presence when nothing custom is needed.
Where AI-built software falls short
- Authentication and permissions. Generated code often works for the happy path and quietly lets one user see another user's data.
- Payments. Webhooks, retries, refunds and duplicate events need careful handling; a mistake costs real money.
- Data design. A database structure that works for ten records may collapse at a hundred thousand, and changing it later is expensive.
- Multi-tenant products. When several companies share one system, tenant isolation must be designed and tested, not assumed.
- Maintenance. Code nobody understands is hard to change. Someone has to own it after launch.
- Accountability. When production breaks at a bad moment, you need a person who answers.
Use AI alone when
- You need copy drafts, wireframe ideas, or help learning a new tool.
- You are building a throwaway prototype you will rewrite anyway.
- You are writing an internal script that touches no customer data.
Hire a human developer when
- Money moves — payments, payroll, invoices.
- Customer data is stored, especially personal or financial data.
- Multiple companies or teams share one database.
- The software runs part of your business and must keep working for years.
- You need quotes, milestones and someone who answers WhatsApp when something breaks.
Cost: AI tools vs a developer
| Option | Upfront cost | Hidden cost |
|---|---|---|
| AI website builder | Low monthly subscription | Limited customisation; moving away later can mean starting over. |
| AI-generated custom code | Low | Security gaps and code nobody can maintain; often rewritten. |
| Developer using AI tools | Moderate | Lower than pure manual work, because boilerplate is faster. |
How I use AI on client projects
AI speeds up the repetitive parts: scaffolding, test cases, first drafts of documentation. I still own the architecture, review every line that handles money or permissions, and stay responsible for launch and fixes. The result is faster delivery without handing judgement to a tool. The workflow is described in more detail in AI-assisted Laravel SaaS development.
A simple rule
If a mistake would only cost you time, try AI first. If a mistake would cost you money, data or customers, hire a developer — who may well use AI to work faster.
